You want to make a video testimonial because you heard that it is a great marketing tool for your business, but you’re worried about getting your customers to do it because you’re worried that it’s a hassle for them and they may not have the time to sit down for a half a day for an on location video shoot.
So you come off the idea of, let’s just do a self self filmed video testimonial. So you call up your client and say, Hey, do you mind doing a video testimonial for me? You can shoot yourself and just send it over. So you wait a week, maybe two, and they send over 1015 seconds video that just says, “Your company has done a fantastic job and has made my business grow by 100%.”
And that’s it. Which while by itself is not a better video testimonial, it does not hit the mark that you really want.
A great video testimonial is about talking about how your business and your services, your products has solved a pain point for your customer.
So are there any tips to make self filmed testimonials work? Well, yes, there is.
The key ingredient to making any testimonial at all is preparation. Well, first, you need to be prepared yourself. You want to be able to provide list of questions or talking points that you want your customer to talk about. Remember what you’re trying to get your customer to do is to help you sell your unique point of difference in your market.
So the testimonial you want them to provide, besides saying that you guys are really good, is also the same because if you use your product or service to increase their business or improve their situation by this much. So you need to know what you want this customer to see by understanding how you use your product or service and how that product or service has helped them.
So once you prepare yourself by getting a list of questions or talking points for your customer, you need to prepare your customer.
So prepare your customer is about two things. First is setting expectations. I know it’s strange to kind of tell your customer what you want them to see, but the reality is if your customer is happy to give you a testimonial, they’ll probably be happy to tell you to tell others how you helped them.
So and that’s the most important part of the testimonial. Setting the expectations and giving them a list of questions or a bit of talking point on what you’re hoping to get out of them actually helps them think about how to give you a valuable testimonial. Otherwise they would just say, you get you did a great job for us.
I mean, we’re very thankful and happy, which is not what you want. So set the expectations and tell them this is what you hope to get from them. Most clients and customers will be happy to speak to it because obviously they’re happy with you, with your service or your product. To even want to give a testimonial the first place.
So the second thing about preparation of your customer is to decide where to film the testimonial.
Finding a location for a video. Testimonials. Actually not that difficult. You’re looking for two things. One is a nice background.
remember, the video testimonial is also a showcase of your brand values as well. So you want it to look as pretty as possible. The second thing you can look out for in the location is sound.
So you try to pick a spot where it’s not actually where you have what we call clean sound. As best as possible, it’s not always easy to find one, but the best you try to get it to as best as possible. And in post-production, you can always fix it up with a little more. It’s not going to be a magic bullet, but it can get a bit better.
So here’s a bonus tip as well. If you want to make self filmed video testimonials, ask your customer, your client, to film themselves on their mobile phones, but not with the selfie camera. You want them to use the the cameras on the back of the phone because most modern smartphones put the best cameras at the back, not the selfie camera.
The selfie camera is good enough for basic video calling. A few selfies here and there, but you’re not expect you don’t expect it to be high quality, just enough to share on social media. So if you want a good quality video, you want that film on the back of the mobile phone,
